PRODUCT OVERVIEW
The JBL Century Gold was released in 1996 as a limited edition to celebrate JBL’s 50th anniversary, revisiting the spirit of the legendary L100 Century with modern JBL drivers.
It pairs the 12-inch Century 1200 woofer with the 5-inch Century 500 Kevlar midrange and the 050 Gold 1-inch titanium-dome tweeter, crossing over at 600 Hz and 2.8 kHz. The mirror-imaged pair is finished in sapele with gold-finish top panels and a signed gold anniversary plaque on the back of each cabinet.
This pair comes with its original Century Gold Owner’s Manual – a commemorative “Limited Edition – Celebrating 50 Years – Genuine JBL” booklet bearing the name of Greg Timbers, JBL Senior Acoustic Engineer. Original documentation like this is rarely kept with a pair and adds real value for collectors.
We restored this pair with careful attention to technical operation and cosmetic presentation, while preserving the original JBL design and voicing.
HQAUDIOS RESTORATION & TESTING

Before Restoration
This JBL Century Gold pair was carefully inspected upon arrival under our incoming quality-control (IQC) checklist – 36 inspection points covering both cabinets, all drivers, the internal components and a full sound check.
All three drivers in each cabinet (Century 1200 woofer, Century 500 midrange and 050 Gold tweeter), the logos, grilles and magnet assemblies were checked and showed no faults. Internally, the crossover networks, binding posts, damping material and internal wiring were also found in good condition.
The sound check – overall acoustic quality, bass, midrange and treble – passed on both speakers.
The inspection recorded light scratches on the top, bottom, right and left side panels of both cabinets. The front and rear panels showed no faults. These findings determined the work required for this specific pair.

During Restoration
Based on the inspection results, this JBL Century Gold pair was restored according to HQaudios’ technical standards while preserving its original engineering and voicing.
Cabinet Refinishing: The light scratches on the top, bottom and side panels of both cabinets were repaired, and those panels were refinished to restore a clean, even sapele finish.
Crossovers & Terminals: The crossover networks, dual binding posts and internal wiring were inspected and found in good condition. No parts required replacement.
Drivers: All drivers retain their original cones and diaphragms, which are in good condition.
Cleaning & Detailing: All drivers, crossover boards and terminals were cleaned, and the cabinets, gold trim and grilles were cleaned and detailed.

After Restoration / Final Testing
Once restoration was completed, the pair underwent comprehensive testing under real operating conditions.
Frequency Response: Measured with an RTA (real-time analyzer) and a calibrated sound card to confirm a smooth, well-balanced response and close matching between the two speakers.
Polarity: Driver polarity was verified with a phase-reversal check so both speakers play in correct phase.
Listening Test: The pair underwent an extended real-world listening test with a wide range of music to confirm dynamics, tonal balance, and stereo imaging.
Final QC: A complete visual and functional quality-control inspection was completed before release.
