Before Restoration
This KLH Model Seven pair was carefully inspected upon arrival to evaluate its mechanical, electrical, and cosmetic condition.
Each cabinet, cone, surround, and spider was checked for originality and for glue joints that had loosened or shifted with age. Every driver was tested by hand for voice-coil rub – a scratching noise or a stiff, binding cone indicates a shifted or heat-damaged voice coil. The DC resistance of each driver was measured and checked for expected values and pair consistency. The crossover networks were examined for bulging or leaking capacitors, each capacitor was measured against its original value (within 10% tolerance), and the high-frequency level controls, wiring and terminals were inspected.
Inspection Findings: The wood finish of the cabinets showed scratches. The grilles and the speaker terminals were in good, complete condition. The grille cloth was glued tightly to the cabinets and could not be removed without damage, so the first measurements were taken from the rear of the cabinets. During the first signal test, one woofer produced a buzz in the bass range.
The inspection results were used to determine the work required for this specific pair.
During Restoration
Based on the inspection results, this KLH Model Seven pair was restored according to HQaudios’ technical standards while preserving its original engineering and voicing.
Cabinets: The scratched wood finish was treated and refinished while keeping the original color of the cabinets.
Grilles: New grille cloth was fitted to both grilles.
Drivers: The drivers were removed from the cabinets and re-tested, including the woofer that produced a buzz during the first signal test. After re-testing, the buzz was eliminated and both woofers play cleanly.
Original Drivers: All drivers retain their original cones and diaphragms, which are in good condition.
Cleaning & Detailing: The drivers, crossovers and terminals were cleaned, and the cabinets and grilles were cleaned and detailed.
After Restoration / Final Testing
Once restoration was completed, the pair underwent comprehensive testing under real operating conditions.
Phase Check: Driver polarity was verified using a phase-reversal check to ensure both speakers play in correct phase.
Level Controls: The high-frequency level controls were checked on both speakers.
Listening Test: The pair underwent an extended real-world listening test with a wide range of music to confirm dynamics, tonal balance, and stereo imaging.
Final QC: Only after completing HQaudios’ restoration and testing process was the pair approved and prepared for its next owner.
