Overview

The Bose 901 Series VI is one of the most recognizable loudspeaker systems in home audio, built around a Direct/Reflecting concept that differs fundamentally from conventional forward-firing speaker designs.

Each enclosure uses nine matched 4.5-inch full-range Helical Voice Coil drivers. Eight are positioned to radiate toward the wall behind the speaker while one faces the listening area, creating Bose’s intended balance of approximately 89% reflected acoustic energy and 11% direct acoustic energy.

The 14-element Acoustic Matrix enclosure incorporates three reactive air columns, allowing the system to achieve broad room coverage and a spacious presentation without a conventional woofer-and-tweeter arrangement.

This pair is finished in black and includes the tulip-style floor stands shown in the product photos. The stands position the cabinets at the height and orientation associated with the classic 901 presentation.

The Bose 901 Series VI creates a presentation that is intentionally broader and more room-dependent than a conventional forward-firing loudspeaker.

Eight drivers in each cabinet radiate toward the wall behind the speaker while one driver faces the listening area. This reflected/direct balance is designed to create a larger acoustic field and a more spacious listening experience.

When positioned correctly and used with the proper Bose 901 Series VI Active Equalizer, the system can produce a smooth, full-bodied tonal balance with broad room coverage and a wide stereo image.

Cosmetic Condition

This Bose 901 Series VI pair presents well overall and retains the understated appearance associated with the Series VI design.

The black cabinets, dark grille surfaces, compact proportions, Bose badges, and tulip-style floor stands create the familiar 901 presentation while allowing the speakers to occupy relatively little visual space for a system using eighteen full-range drivers.

Normal signs of age and previous use may remain, including light marks, small finish imperfections, minor edge wear, or cosmetic wear on the stands and grille surfaces.

Because the Bose 901 Series VI Active Equalizer is essential to the intended tonal balance, sound-quality issues caused by operating the speakers without the correct Series VI equalizer are not considered a speaker defect.

Important Vintage Audio Note

The Bose 901 Series VI is designed as a complete acoustic system in which the speakers, room placement, and matching Series VI Active Equalizer work together.

The rear label on each speaker specifies use with the Bose 901 Series VI Active Equalizer. Do not evaluate the intended tonal performance of the speakers without the correct equalizer installed in the signal path.

Use an amplifier capable of stable operation with an 8-ohm speaker load and avoid sustained amplifier clipping.
