HQaudios Restoration & Testing Process

Before Restoration

• After decades of service, the Technics 1500‘s Direct Drive transport system, precision tape transport mechanism, recording and playback circuitry, and three-motor drive system require careful inspection before restoration begins.

• For this Technics 1500, HQaudios placed particular attention on the condition of the Direct Drive capstan motor, reel motors, tape heads, capstan shaft, pinch roller, tape guides, reel tables, tension arms, brakes, and the complete tape path. These components are critical to tape handling accuracy, speed stability, and long-term mechanical reliability.

• The power supply, recording and playback circuits, signal path, transport control electronics, switches, push buttons, VU meter system, and all audio connections were also carefully evaluated to determine the deck’s overall operating condition before restoration started.

During Restoration

• Based on the inspection results, this technics 1500 was restored according to HQaudios’ technical standards while preserving the engineering and performance characteristics that have made this model one of Technics’ most respected reel-to-reel tape decks.

• The transport mechanism was professionally lubricated, while the transport assembly was cleaned, inspected, and adjusted to restore smooth and accurate tape movement. Tape heads, capstan shaft, pinch roller, tape guides, and the entire tape path were carefully cleaned and evaluated to maintain proper tape contact and transport stability.

• The power supply received replacement electrolytic capacitors to improve long-term reliability and stable operation. Playback, recording, fast forward, rewind, pause, braking, and transport functions were tested and calibrated to restore dependable performance.

• The power supply, signal path, and internal circuit boards were inspected to ensure long-term reliability. Components that no longer met technical specifications were replaced where necessary, while critical solder joints were reinforced to improve operational stability.

• After the technical restoration was completed, the exterior was professionally cleaned and detailed to preserve the Technics 1500’s original appearance while respecting the authentic character of vintage Technics equipment.

After Restoration

• Once restoration was completed, this Technics 1500 underwent comprehensive functional testing under real operating conditions.

• Playback and recording performance were verified at all available tape speeds. The Direct Drive transport system, reel motors, channel balance, speed stability, VU meter response, and all audio inputs and outputs were thoroughly tested to ensure the deck performed as originally designed.

• Finally, the unit underwent several hours of continuous listening tests through a complete vintage audio system to evaluate analog sound quality, transport stability, and overall real-world performance.

• Only after successfully meeting HQaudios’ restoration and testing standards was the Technics 1500 approved and prepared for its next owner.
