HQaudios Restoration & Testing Process
Before Restoration
As received, this Pioneer CT-F9090 was in the tired, neglected condition typical of a unit that had sat in storage for decades and was no longer operating normally. It was dirty inside and out, with a heavy layer of dust and cobwebs across the chassis and circuit boards. Several dial and indicator lamps were burned out. The input jacks, switches and push-buttons were oxidized and noisy, and the exterior carried scratches and marks from age and previous use. The drive belts had perished, the transport was sluggish and the heads and tape path were dirty from long service.
On the bench, the power-supply and record/playback stage electrolytic capacitors were found aged and out of tolerance.
A full inspection of the power supply, record/playback electronics, transport, motors, heads, controls and lamps was then carried out to determine the work required for this specific unit.
During Restoration
Based on the inspection results, this Pioneer CT-F9090 was restored according to HQaudios’ technical standards while preserving its original engineering and character. The power supply was recapped (1 × 2200µF/63V, 5 × 220µF/50V, 1 × 100µF/100V) and the record/playback amplifier stage was repaired and recapped (1 × 2200µF/63V, 10 × 10µF/50V Nichicon MUSE audio-grade capacitors, 4 × 2SK117 FETs). The transport mechanism was serviced and the drive belts replaced with new. All burned-out dial and indicator lamps were replaced. Every input jack, switch, potentiometer and push-button was cleaned and treated with contact cleaner to remove oxidation and restore silent, positive operation. The heads, capstan and pinch roller were cleaned and demagnetized, and the transport was lubricated and adjusted. The chassis, boards, faceplate were fully cleaned and detailed. Before final approval, the deck received an additional service at our U.S. facility: the broken rubber idler tire and the drive belt were replaced, the motor noise was corrected, the volume controls and switches were cleaned again, the RCA jacks were cleaned, the rear panel was repainted, the dented rear aluminum frame was straightened, and the cassette compartment and VU meters were cleaned.
After Restoration
Once restoration was completed, this unit underwent comprehensive functional testing under real operating conditions. Playback, recording, fast forward, rewind, tape speed, transport stability, record/playback channels, heads, Dolby, tape-type selection, memory stop/play, VU meters, controls, and audio inputs and outputs were tested.
Finally, the Pioneer CT-F9090 underwent an extended real-world listening and operational test to evaluate sound quality, stability and overall performance. Only after successfully meeting HQaudios’ restoration and testing standards was the unit approved and prepared for its next owner.
Heads, Tape Path & Transport
2-Head Ferrite System – The CT-F9090 uses a ferrite record/playback head together with a separate ferrite erase head. This traditional two-head configuration is designed for reliable, long-lasting cassette recording and playback.
Two-Motor Transport – The deck uses a two-motor, belt-driven single-capstan transport. The transport section, tape path, capstan, reel-drive system, and operating controls are central to the CT-F9090’s mechanical performance, and it was serviced with new belts on this unit.
These areas receive particular attention throughout HQaudios’ restoration and testing process. Additional close-up photos or videos are available upon request.
