About This Deck

Up for sale is an AKAI GX-635D stereo reel-to-reel tape deck, one of Akai’s best-known large-reel Auto-Reverse machines. It supports 10.5-inch reels, bidirectional recording and playback, a six-head system, and a three-motor transport.

This particular GX-635D has received a custom Gold Limited Edition cosmetic finish on the machine itself, including custom Gold styling and lettering as pictured. Matching Gold reel and NAB hub accessories are also included to complete the presentation.

the Gold Limited Edition appearance is a custom cosmetic presentation and is not represented as a factory-original AKAI limited-edition production model.

mechanically, and acoustically to determine the condition of the transport,
recording / playback circuitry, signal switching, heads, controls, and tape path.

• GX record heads, GX playback heads, and erase heads inspected
• Capstan, pinch roller, reel tables, tape guides, and tension system checked
• Forward and reverse Play / Record operation evaluated
• Fast Forward, Rewind, Stop, Pause, and Auto-Reverse functions checked
• Left and right channels, VU meters, inputs, outputs, and level controls evaluated
• Signal-switching and record/play sections inspected for age-related instability
• Capacitors and accessible solder / connection points in serviced sections checked

During Restoration

Sound & Recording Character

The GX-635D was designed to combine serious open-reel recording capability with the convenience of Auto-Reverse operation and large 10.5-inch reels.
Its separate record and playback heads allow tape monitoring during recording, while the bidirectional head arrangement supports recording and playback in both directions.

At 7.5 ips, Akai specifies a wide frequency response with WR tape, making the GX-635D well suited to high-quality analog playback and recording when used with properly prepared tape and a clean, correctly adjusted tape path.
