About This Receiver

Up for sale is a professionally restored Pioneer SX-980, one of Pioneer’s highly regarded late-1970s SX-x80 series stereo receivers.

This unit has been given a distinctive custom black front-panel finish by HQaudios, while retaining the classic Pioneer layout, blue Fluroscan power meters, analog tuning dial, and original receiver architecture.

The SX-980 delivers 80 watts per channel into 8 ohms and provides dual phono inputs, AUX, microphone input, two tape loops with dubbing, PRE OUT / POWER AMP IN, speaker A / B switching, turnover tone controls, high and low filters, loudness, and FM muting.

This unit is configured for AC 120V / 60Hz U.S. mains power and can be used directly with standard U.S. household power. The Walnut wood case shown in the photos is included.

Professional Restoration & Testing

Before Restoration

When this Pioneer SX-980 arrived, we inspected the power supply, amplifier stages, tuner section, protection circuit, controls, lamps, connections, and cosmetic condition.

• Internal and external surfaces showed dust, dirt, and normal vintage wear
• Several dial and indicator lamps were burned out
• Input jacks, switches, potentiometers, and push-buttons showed oxidation and noise
• The rear antenna was broken
• Original spring-clip speaker terminals were cracked and no longer held cables securely
• The Walnut wood case showed scratches and age-related wear
• The unit would not power up because the AC mains fuse had blown
• Power-supply electrolytic capacitors were found aged and out of tolerance

During Restoration

• The blown AC mains fuse was replaced after the power-supply section was inspected and serviced
• Power-supply capacitors replaced as documented: 2 × 100µF/100V, 2 × 470µF/100V, 1 × 2200µF/35V, 1 × 220µF/35V, 4 × 470µF/25V, and 4 × 47µF/25V
• Dial and indicator lighting upgraded with replacement 6V and 8V LED lamps
• Input jacks, switches, potentiometers, and push-buttons cleaned and treated
• Broken rear antenna repaired
• Cracked spring-clip speaker terminals upgraded to new binding posts
• Chassis, circuit boards, controls, faceplate, and interior cleaned and detailed
• Walnut wood case cleaned and refinished
• Custom black front-panel finish applied by HQaudios

After Restoration

• Amplifier operation and channel balance tested
• AM / FM reception tested
• Phono, AUX, microphone, and tape inputs tested
• Tape monitor and dubbing functions tested
