HQaudios Restoration & Testing Process

Before Restoration

• After decades of service, the Sansui 8080DB‘s power supply, amplifier section, FM/AM tuner, Dolby FM circuitry, preamplifier circuits, input selector, volume and tone controls, switches, relays, and illuminated dial system were carefully inspected before restoration began.

• For this 8080DB, HQaudios placed particular attention on the condition of the power supply, output stage, protection circuit, Dolby circuitry, tuner section, controls, switches, potentiometers, speaker terminals, RCA input/output connections, and internal wiring. These components were evaluated for reliability, channel balance, and overall audio performance.

• The amplifier circuits, tuner alignment, Dolby processing circuits, signal path, dial illumination, tuning mechanism, meters, and front-panel controls were also carefully evaluated to determine the receiver’s overall operating condition before restoration.

During Restoration

• Based on the inspection results, the 8080DB was restored according to HQaudios’ technical standards while preserving the engineering and performance characteristics that have made this model one of Sansui’s most respected vintage stereo receivers.

• The power supply, amplifier section, Dolby circuitry, and signal path were cleaned, inspected, serviced, and adjusted to restore stable and reliable performance. Controls, switches, relays, and connectors were carefully cleaned to eliminate noise and ensure smooth operation.

• FM/AM tuner performance and applicable Dolby functions were checked and adjusted according to service specifications, while channel balance, stereo operation, input selection, speaker outputs, tone controls, protection circuitry, and front-panel functions were tested for dependable operation.

• The power supply, signal path, Dolby boards, and internal circuit boards were inspected to ensure long-term reliability. Components that no longer met technical specifications were replaced based on the condition of this unit, while critical solder joints were inspected and reinforced to improve operational stability.

• After the technical restoration was completed, the exterior was professionally cleaned and detailed to preserve the 8080DB‘s original appearance while respecting the authentic character of vintage Sansui equipment.

After Restoration

• Once restoration had been completed, the 8080DB underwent comprehensive functional testing under real operating conditions.

• Amplifier performance, tuner reception, Dolby performance, channel balance, output power, protection circuitry, meter response, dial illumination, and all audio inputs and outputs were thoroughly tested to ensure the receiver performed as originally designed.

• Finally, the unit underwent several hours of continuous listening tests through a complete vintage audio system to evaluate sound quality, operational stability, and overall real-world performance.

• Only after successfully meeting HQaudios’ restoration and testing standards was the Sansui 8080DB approved and prepared for its next owner.
