JBL C70 Alpha I Speaker Pair – 123A-1 Woofer + PR12 Passive Radiator – Restored

Professionally Restored & Tested by HQaudios – Backed by Our 1-Year Warranty.

About This Pair

We are offering this restored pair of JBL C70 Alpha I vintage loudspeakers, one of JBL’s large furniture-style home loudspeaker systems from the late-1960s era.

The C70 Alpha I uses a distinctive JBL driver combination consisting of a 123A-1 12-inch woofer, LE5-2 midrange, and LE20-1 high-frequency driver, together with a PR12 12-inch passive radiator.

This active driver combination shares important DNA with the early JBL systems associated with the original L100 Century and 4310 generation, while the C70 takes a very different approach with its substantially larger furniture-style cabinet and passive-radiator bass loading.

This pair has been restored, inspected, cleaned, and tested by our HQaudios team and is ready for its next system.

Why the JBL C70 Alpha I Is Special

The C70 Alpha I represents an interesting chapter in early JBL home loudspeaker design.

Its 123A-1, LE5-2, and LE20-1 active driver combination is closely related to the early JBL architecture that became well known through the original L100 Century and 4310 generation.

The C70, however, is not simply an L100 installed in a larger cabinet. JBL paired this driver system with a PR12 passive radiator and placed it in a much larger, low-profile furniture-style enclosure.

The result is a distinctly different JBL design that combines familiar early JBL driver technology with a larger cabinet volume and passive-radiator low-frequency system.

For collectors and listeners who appreciate classic JBL engineering, the C70 Alpha I offers a less commonly encountered alternative to the better-known monitor-style designs of the same era.

HQaudios Restoration & Testing

Before Restoration

When this pair arrived at our workshop, the cabinets, grilles, speaker terminals, and individual driver sections were inspected carefully.

The wood cabinets showed noticeable age-related scratches. Both grilles were present and generally intact, with light cosmetic wear and loose grille fastening points noted during inspection.

The speaker terminal assemblies were also checked and found present and complete.

Driver Testing

As part of our electrical inspection, the bass, midrange, and treble sections of both speakers were measured individually.

Driver SectionSpeaker 1Speaker 2
Bass4.8 ohms4.8 ohms
Midrange5.1 ohms5.8 ohms
Treble3.7 ohms3.7 ohms

These readings were recorded as part of the inspection before the pair moved through the final restoration and testing process.

Restoration Work

Our technicians restored and detailed the wood cabinets while retaining their existing color and overall vintage appearance.

Attention was also given to the grille fastening points identified during the initial inspection, followed by cleaning of the grille assemblies and cabinet surfaces.

Adhesive around the treble driver area was re-applied where needed to secure the assembly properly.

The speaker assemblies, controls, and accessible surfaces were then cleaned and prepared for final testing.

Final Testing

After the restoration work was completed, the pair went through a full system check and signal test.

Operation of the bass, midrange, and treble sections was verified on both speakers, followed by a final listening check.

The speakers then received a final cleaning and were prepared for photography and sale.

Technical Condition

The low-, midrange, and high-frequency sections of both speakers were inspected and tested during our restoration process.

The level controls, speaker connections, and overall system operation were also checked before the pair completed final testing.

Sound Character

The C70 combines the dynamic character associated with JBL’s early 12-inch 123A family with a dedicated LE5-2 midrange and LE20-1 high-frequency driver.

Its large cabinet and PR12 passive-radiator system give the C70 a different presentation from JBL’s more compact designs, with a substantial sense of scale and a strong low-frequency foundation.

This combination works especially well with classic rock, jazz, blues, soul, funk, and live recordings where drums, bass, vocals, and dynamic impact are important to the presentation.

Cosmetic Condition

The furniture-style wood cabinets have been restored, cleaned, and detailed and present very well for their age.

  • Cabinets:
The wood surfaces were restored and detailed while retaining their existing brown wood-tone color and vintage character. Normal signs of age and use remain.
  • Grilles:
Both woven front grilles are included as shown. The grille assemblies were cleaned, and the fastening points identified during inspection were addressed.
  • Front Baffles:
The black front baffles present cleanly and contrast with the white-cone low-frequency sections.
  • Drivers:
The woofer, passive radiator, midrange, and high-frequency assemblies are shown clearly in the actual product photos.

Please review all listing photos carefully, as they show the actual pair and form an important part of the cosmetic description.
