Sound Character
The JBL 4406 is designed for absolute truth. As a near-field monitor, its primary goal is to provide a transparent window into the recording.
The pure titanium dome tweeter extends smoothly to provide incredible air, detail, and spatial cues, rendering acoustic guitars, cymbals, and female vocals with startling realism. Because the drivers are placed in close proximity on the front baffle, the 4406 exhibits pinpoint stereo imaging, allowing you to easily locate individual instruments within the soundstage.
While its 6.5-inch woofer will not rattle the windows like its larger 4300/4400 series siblings, the bass it does produce is exceptionally tight, fast, and musical. It is a highly analytical yet highly musical speaker that rewards the listener with incredible detail and a fatigue-free presentation.
HQaudios Restoration & Testing Process
Before Restoration
Despite their compact size, the 4406 monitors undergo the same rigorous inspection as JBL’s larger studio models. We carefully evaluate the condition of the 6.5-inch woofers, paying close attention to the foam surrounds, which can deteriorate with age and use.
The delicate 1-inch pure titanium dome tweeters are closely inspected for any dents or imperfections that could impact high-frequency dispersion. The internal crossover networks and front-panel high-frequency level controls are tested for proper operation, and the walnut veneer cabinets are checked for structural integrity.
During Restoration
The woofer surrounds are inspected and serviced as needed to ensure proper operation.
The high-frequency attenuators are disassembled and treated with professional contact cleaner to eliminate any scratching or signal dropouts. The crossover networks are serviced with high-quality audio-grade capacitors where necessary to restore the exact crossover frequency and phase coherence between the woofer and tweeter.
Finally, the classic walnut veneer cabinets are gently cleaned, conditioned, and hand-oiled to revive their rich, natural luster, preserving their professional studio aesthetic.
After Restoration
Once restoration is complete, the 4406 undergoes comprehensive acoustic testing. A controlled frequency sweep was used to check for buzzing, rubbing, dropouts, and abnormal noise. Both speakers were then compared for stable output and channel balance.
We then conduct hours of continuous near-field and far-field listening tests. We evaluate their stereo imaging capabilities, transient speed, and vocal clarity to ensure they meet the strict performance standards expected of a JBL professional monitor.
Drivers, Crossovers & Cabinets
The synergy between the 6.5-inch woofer and the titanium tweeter is what makes the 4406 so special. Maintaining the integrity of these components is crucial to preserving the speaker’s ruler-flat frequency response and legendary near-field imaging.
Because the acoustic integrity of these parts dictates the final sound, they receive particular attention throughout HQaudios’ restoration process. Whenever possible, close-up photographs of the drivers without the grilles are included, and additional photos or videos are available upon request.

Classic Marantz or Sansui (Warm & Musical)
Receivers: Marantz 2238B, Sansui AU-517

Yamaha Natural Sound (Clean & Analytical)
Amplifiers: Yamaha CA-810 or A-700
Result: Maximizes the transparency and clinical precision of the monitors. Perfect for critical listening or studio playback.
Classic Tube Amplification
Amplifiers: EL84 or moderate-power EL34 tube amplifiers
Result: The holographic imaging of tubes combined with the pinpoint accuracy of the 4406 creates a stunning near-field 3D soundstage.
Basic Use Guide
To help maintain the long-term performance of your vintage monitors, we recommend the following:
- Place the speakers on sturdy speaker stands or desktop isolation pads, positioning the tweeters at ear level for the best stereo imaging.
- Use high-quality, properly gauged speaker wire.
- Periodically rotate the high-frequency level control back and forth to keep the internal contacts clean and prevent oxidation.
- Avoid pushing your amplifier into “clipping” (distortion at high volumes), as prolonged or severe amplifier clipping can damage the titanium tweeters.
- If placing on a bookshelf, ensure there is adequate clearance for the front port to breathe.
- Contact us anytime if you need assistance with room placement, amplifier matching, or setup.
