PRODUCT OVERVIEW
Introduced in 1982, the JBL 4344 represents one of JBL’s classic large-format four-way professional studio monitor designs.
Developed for demanding monitoring applications, the 4344 combines dedicated low-frequency, mid-bass, horn-loaded high-frequency, and ultra-high-frequency sections within a substantial bass-reflex enclosure.
The factory speaker architecture uses a 15-inch JBL 2235H woofer, a 10-inch JBL 2122H mid-bass driver, a horn-loaded compression-driver section with the JBL 2307 horn and 2308 acoustic lens, and a JBL slot-type ultra-high-frequency driver.
The large woofer provides an authoritative low-frequency foundation, while the dedicated mid-bass driver supports clarity and definition through the critical lower-midrange region. The horn-loaded section and slot-type UHF driver provide the detailed upper-frequency presentation associated with JBL professional monitors.
Front-panel level controls allow adjustment of the tonal balance. The rear configuration panel supports operation through the internal passive crossover or a properly configured external active crossover system.
External crossover operation requires a compatible active crossover and appropriately configured amplification. Changing the rear selector alone does not provide a complete multi-amplifier setup.
This pair features walnut veneer cabinets, classic blue front baffles, restored blue grilles, serviced level controls, and upgraded rear speaker connections.
Our HQaudios team carried out professional servicing and cosmetic restoration to improve the speakers’ functional condition and exterior presentation while retaining their classic JBL 4344 design.

HQAUDIOS RESTORATION & TESTING

Before Restoration
When this JBL 4344 pair entered our workshop, our technicians inspected its mechanical, electrical, acoustic, and cosmetic condition.
The cabinets showed age-related cosmetic wear, including scratches on the bottom panels. The grille fabric and mounting hardware required attention, rear speaker terminals showed wear, and some mounting hardware had developed oxidation.
The front-panel L-pad controls also produced noise during adjustment and required servicing.
Woofer & Mid-Bass Inspection: We examined the large cone-driver assemblies, including their cones, foam surround areas, spiders, and mounting hardware. The woofer and mid-bass drivers were checked for signs of voice-coil rubbing.
Compression Drivers & UHF Sections: The upper-frequency driver sections were evaluated electrically and acoustically rather than through manual cone movement.
Electrical Measurements: Driver DC resistance was evaluated in relation to the expected DCR characteristics of the corresponding driver models.
Crossover Inspection: The crossover boards, accessible components, connections, and terminal assemblies were inspected for visible deterioration and connection issues.

During Restoration
Our technicians completed mechanical, electrical, and cosmetic restoration work while preserving the JBL 4344 four-way loudspeaker architecture.
Front-Panel L-Pad Controls: We disassembled, cleaned, and treated the level-control assemblies to address noisy operation. After servicing, the controls operated smoothly and quietly through their adjustment ranges.
Rear Speaker Terminals: The worn terminal hardware was replaced with new binding posts, providing secure speaker-cable connection points.
Grille Restoration: Our team repaired the grille assemblies where needed and installed new blue grille cloth and mounting pegs to restore their appearance and fit.
Mounting Hardware: Corroded screws and mounting components were replaced where required.
Cabinet Restoration: The walnut veneer cabinet surfaces received cosmetic detailing, and the scratched bottom panels were refinished to improve their presentation.
Badges & Rear Labels: Reproduction cosmetic badges and rear labels were installed where original pieces were damaged or missing.
Driver & Crossover Cleaning: The accessible driver surfaces, crossover boards, wiring connections, and terminal areas were carefully cleaned during servicing.
Final Preparation: The speakers were reassembled and prepared for functional testing after the restoration work was completed.

After Restoration / Final Testing
After the service work was completed, the speakers underwent operational testing and final listening evaluation.
Low-Frequency Output: Both 15-inch woofer sections were evaluated during playback. The pair produced low-frequency output as part of the completed four-way speaker-system test.
Mid-Bass Output: The dedicated 10-inch mid-bass sections were checked during playback for operating consistency and integration with the other driver sections.
Horn-Loaded High-Frequency Output: Both compression-driver sections were included in the electrical and listening checks, with high-frequency reproduction verified during final testing.
Ultra-High-Frequency Output: Both slot-type UHF sections were included in the completed loudspeaker evaluation.
Level Controls: The serviced L-pad controls were operated through their adjustment ranges and produced smooth, quiet adjustment after cleaning.
Rear Crossover Selection: The internal / external crossover selection assemblies were checked for their operating function.
Driver Polarity: Driver connections were checked for correct polarity as part of the functional evaluation.
Final Listening Test: Both speakers were evaluated together during music playback to assess overall tonal balance, output consistency, and stereo presentation.
Final QC: The pair completed the final visual and operational inspection before preparation for sale.

CONDITION

Technical Condition
15-Inch Low-Frequency Sections: The woofer assemblies were inspected for mechanical condition and evaluated during playback after servicing. Both speakers produced low-frequency output during the final system checks.
10-Inch Mid-Bass Sections: The mid-bass drivers were inspected for mechanical condition and included in final playback testing. Both sections reproduced the intended mid-bass frequencies as part of the complete four-way systems.
Horn-Loaded Compression-Driver Sections: The compression-driver assemblies were evaluated electrically and acoustically. Both speakers produced high-frequency output during the completed operating checks.
Slot-Type Ultra-High-Frequency Sections: The UHF driver assemblies were included in the electrical and acoustic inspection, followed by successful completion of the speaker-system evaluation.
Crossover Networks: Both crossover assemblies and accessible connections were inspected and cleaned. The complete four-way systems were subsequently evaluated during playback testing.
Front-Panel L-Pad Controls: The controls were disassembled, serviced, and checked after reassembly. Adjustment is smooth and quiet during operation.
Rear Speaker Connections: New binding posts have replaced the worn terminal hardware, providing secure connection points for speaker cables.
Internal / External Crossover Selector: The rear selection assemblies were inspected and checked during final testing. External mode requires compatible active crossover equipment and correctly configured amplification.
Complete System Operation: Both monitors completed their functional and listening evaluation following restoration.

Cosmetic Condition
Walnut Cabinets: Walnut veneer cabinet surfaces have been cleaned and cosmetically detailed. The bottom panels were refinished to address earlier scratches. Minor vintage surface marks remain on the cabinet exteriors.
Blue Front Baffles: Classic JBL blue front panels retain their four-driver arrangement, acoustic-lens assemblies, front controls, and identification areas. Light age-related wear remains.
Woofers & Mid-Bass Drivers: The visible cone surfaces, surrounds, dust caps, mounting frames, and hardware retain the characteristic appearance of the JBL 4344 design.
Horns & Acoustic Lenses: The black horn and acoustic-lens assemblies are present within the upper-frequency sections, with vintage surface character visible in the product photographs.
UHF Drivers: Slot-type ultra-high-frequency assemblies are fitted on the front baffles as part of the four-way driver configuration.
Blue Grilles: The grille assemblies have been restored with new blue fabric and new mounting pegs. They present a refreshed appearance while retaining the classic JBL monitor styling.
Front Controls: The front-panel control knobs and surrounding areas have been cleaned and serviced, with minor age-related wear remaining where visible.
Badges & Labels: Reproduction badges and rear labels were installed where the original cosmetic pieces were damaged or missing.
Rear Panels: The rear crossover-configuration panels and speaker connections remain part of the JBL 4344 layout. Upgraded binding posts and replacement cosmetic labels are present.
Overall Presentation: A professionally restored vintage JBL 4344 set with walnut veneer cabinetry, blue front baffles, restored blue grilles, and minor remaining age-related cosmetic wear. Please review all actual product photographs for the exact condition.
