Akai GX-646 Custom Red Auto-Reverse Reel-to-Reel – Restored – 1-Year Warranty
Professionally Restored by HQaudios – Fully Tested – Backed by Our 1-Year Warranty.
Up for sale is the Akai GX-646, a highly advanced vintage reel-to-reel tape deck introduced during the early 1980s, representing the brilliant evolution of Akai’s legendary GX-series.
Building upon the success of its predecessors, the GX-646 introduced compatibility with EE (Extra Efficiency) tape, pushing analog high-frequency response into the realm of modern digital fidelity. It features a nearly indestructible Glass & Crystal (GX) Ferrite 6-head system and a robust 3-motor transport. With seamless continuous playback and recording in both directions (Auto-Reverse), the GX-646 stands as one of the most desirable and visually stunning analog recorders ever produced.
This unit has been professionally restored, serviced, and tested by HQaudios while preserving the original engineering and authentic analog character of the Akai GX-646. This particular deck also features a Custom Red refinish, giving it a distinctive, one-of-a-kind appearance that sets it apart from standard factory-finish units.
Key Highlights
- 6-Head GX Glass & Crystal Ferrite System
- 3-Motor Direct-Drive Transport with Auto-Reverse Recording & Playback
- 10.5″ Reel Capacity / 3¾ & 7½ ips

Sound Character
The Akai GX-646 delivers a highly dynamic and incredibly detailed sonic presentation, seamlessly bridging the gap between analog warmth and modern resolution.
When paired with EE (Extra Efficiency) tape at 7½ ips, the frequency response expands up to a remarkable 33 kHz, rendering high-hats, acoustic guitars, and female vocals with breathtaking air and clarity. The lower registers maintain the thick, musical saturation that high-quality analog magnetic tape is famous for. The direct-drive capstan motor ensures rock-solid pitch stability and exceptionally low wow and flutter, preserving the delicate details of complex musical passages.
This deck is an excellent choice for creating high-fidelity analog mix tapes, archiving pristine vinyl records, or simply enjoying the mesmerizing visual and sonic experience of a massive 10.5-inch reel-to-reel machine.
Cosmetic Condition
This unit is in Very Good vintage cosmetic condition and features a Custom Red refinish (not the original factory finish), with normal signs of age and previous use consistent with premium audio equipment from the early 1980s.
Please review all photos carefully, as they are part of the description.

- Rear Panel / Connections: RCA inputs and outputs are clean and securely mounted.
HQaudios Restoration & Testing Process
Before Restoration
The Akai GX-646 was carefully inspected upon arrival to evaluate its overall mechanical, electrical, operational, and cosmetic condition.
Particular attention was given to the transport mechanism, 6-head assembly, pinch roller, capstan system, reel motors, brakes, tape path, EE equalization circuitry, auto-reverse sensing system, and internal power supply.
The inspection results were used to determine the work required for this specific unit.
During Restoration
Based on the inspection results, this Akai GX-646 was restored according to HQaudios’ technical standards while preserving its original engineering and operating characteristics.
The entire tape transport path and GX heads were professionally cleaned and polished. Hardened mechanical grease was removed, and linkages were re-lubricated. The pinch roller mechanism and brakes were inspected and serviced. The audio boards, recording/playback levels, and auto-reverse sensing contacts were inspected and serviced as documented. The front-panel switches and potentiometers were cleaned and treated with DeoxIT for scratch-free operation.
After Restoration
Once restoration was completed, this unit underwent comprehensive functional testing under real operating conditions.
Play, Record, Fast Forward, Rewind, Tape Speeds (3¾ and 7½ ips), Auto-Reverse functionality, Record/Playback channels, EE Tape switches, and illuminated VU meters were tested. Finally, the deck underwent an extended tape playback and recording test to evaluate transport stability, pitch accuracy, and overall sonic performance.
Only after completing HQaudios’ restoration and testing process was the unit approved and prepared for its next owner.

Suggested Pairing
The Akai GX-646 pairs exceptionally well with equipment that complements its advanced design, power requirements, impedance, efficiency, and pristine sonic characteristics.
Vintage Pioneer System (Dynamic & Punchy)
Receiver/Amp: Pioneer SX-1250, SX-1980, or Spec Series Amplifiers
Why it works: The massive power reserves and high dynamic headroom of classic Pioneer gear perfectly complement the extended high-frequency response and punchy analog output of the GX-646 when running EE tape.
Vintage Marantz Setup (Warm & Musical)
Receiver: Marantz 2285B or 2325
Why it works: The legendary warmth of classic Marantz receivers thickens the analog tape sound even further, creating a beautifully rich, fat, and deeply musical listening experience.
For the best performance, ensure that all connected equipment is electrically and mechanically compatible with the Akai GX-646 and properly configured before use.
Basic Use Guide
To help maintain the long-term performance of this advanced tape deck, we recommend the following:
- Use the correct tape type and reel size: Always use proper NAB hub adapters for 10.5-inch reels and verify the tape is threaded exactly according to the diagram.
- Select the correct Tape EQ/Bias: Ensure the front panel tape selector is set correctly for normal tape or EE tape to achieve accurate frequency response during recording.
- Keep the tape path and heads clean: Use 99% isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs every 15-20 hours of use to maintain crisp high frequencies and prevent tape slippage.
- Auto-Reverse: Ensure your magnetic tapes are equipped with sensing foil at the ends of the recording to properly utilize the auto-reverse function.
- Verify rear-panel voltage configuration before connecting the unit to a wall outlet.
- Please message us via platform messaging if assistance with setup or tape compatibility is needed.
