PRODUCT OVERVIEW

The Akai GX-635D is a vintage open-reel stereo tape deck featuring a six-head system, three-motor transport, and automatic reverse operation. Designed for serious home recording and playback, it combines the flexibility of a four-track stereo format with Akai’s GX recording and playback head technology.

The six-head architecture consists of two GX recording heads, two GX playback heads, and two erase heads. This configuration supports the GX-635D’s bidirectional recording and playback capabilities. Its three-motor design uses a dedicated AC servo capstan motor and separate reel-drive motors for tape handling.

The GX-635D accepts reels up to 10.5 inches in diameter and provides two tape speeds: 3¾ and 7½ inches per second. A real-time counter, variable pitch control, dual illuminated-style VU meter assemblies, and front-panel transport controls reflect the model’s emphasis on recording flexibility and operator control.

Before Restoration

The GX-635D is built around a precision tape transport, multiple recording and playback heads, and separate electronic circuits for tape handling and audio operation. The transport includes two reel-drive motors, a capstan motor, tension arms, pinch rollers, and directional tape controls.

During Restoration

Exterior Documentation: We photographed the custom orange cabinet finish, front panel, transport controls, and exterior surfaces.

Tape Transport Documentation: We photographed the visible reel tables, tape path, tension-arm assemblies, pinch-roller area, and head-cover components.

Control Layout Documentation: We recorded the visible arrangement of the transport keys, tape-speed selector, pitch control, input controls, and monitor controls.
