Before Restoration

When this Marantz 4270 entered our workshop, our technicians inspected its electrical, mechanical and cosmetic condition before service.

The inspection covered the power-supply and amplifier sections, accessible signal connections, front-panel controls, the tuner, Gyro-Touch tuning mechanism, dial illumination, and the stereo/quadraphonic operating arrangement.

Aging electronic components and lighting assemblies were also evaluated. The custom black faceplate, dial window, silver controls and wooden case were examined for cosmetic wear.

Technical Condition

Stereo Amplifier: The front-channel amplifier system was evaluated following technical service. Left and right stereo playback was checked through music reproduction.

Quadraphonic Configuration: The receiver retains its original four-channel amplifier architecture, rear Power Mode selector and separate front/rear connections. Correct PRE OUT / MAIN IN jumper connections are required for normal four-channel operation.

Power Supply & Electronic Sections: The power-supply and amplifier assemblies received inspection and service attention, followed by stereo playback evaluation.

Controls & Switches: The front-panel controls were included in the service process and assessed during operating checks.

Gyro-Touch Tuning: The tuning mechanism, dial and analog meter assemblies were examined during service, retaining the traditional Marantz control layout.

Dolby & Vari-Matrix: The original Dolby and Vari-Matrix circuitry and associated controls remain installed in the receiver.

Rear Signal Connections: The receiver retains separate FRONT and REAR PRE OUT / MAIN IN connectors for its original operating configurations.

AC Power: Factory-rated for 120V AC, 50/60Hz operation, compatible with U.S. mains power.

Stereo Mode – 70W x 2: The amplifier operates in bridged stereo configuration. Connect speakers rated at 8 ohms or higher to the FRONT speaker terminals only.

Quadraphonic Mode – 25W x 4: The receiver provides separate front and rear amplifier channels for a correctly connected four-speaker system.

Power Mode Selection: Always turn the receiver OFF before changing the rear-panel POWER MODE switch.

Bridged Stereo Connections: Speaker outputs are not common-ground in bridged mode. Do not use speaker selectors or accessories that connect speaker negative terminals together.

PRE OUT / MAIN IN Connections: Proper jumper links or compatible external signal routing are required between the corresponding preamplifier and power-amplifier connections for normal operation.

Vari-Matrix: The built-in circuitry provides synthesized four-channel playback. This receiver is not represented as including an optional dedicated SQ decoder.
