1. ABOUT THIS AKAI GX-646
Offered here is an Akai GX-646 Auto-Reverse Reel-to-Reel Tape Deck,
professionally restored, serviced, tested, and refinished in a distinctive
Custom Red finish.
The GX-646 is one of Akai’s highly regarded large-format open-reel machines,

10.5-inch reels.
This particular machine underwent electronic and mechanical inspection and restoration by HQaudios,
including repair of a documented right-channel record/playback fault,
service of associated switching and contact circuitry,
and comprehensive functional testing before being offered for sale.
The unit has also been converted for standard U.S. 120V AC operation,
making it ready for use in the United States without an external step-down transformer.

3. CONDITION BEFORE RESTORATION
During the initial technical inspection, the unit was found to have a fault in the
record/playback preamplifier section affecting the right channel.
The associated record/playback switching and contact circuitry also required service
to restore proper and reliable operation.
As with many vintage reel-to-reel machines of this age,
the transport system, switching contacts, tape path,
controls, and electronic circuits required inspection,
cleaning, servicing, and adjustment before professional resale.
4. PROFESSIONAL RESTORATION WORK
Our restoration process focused on correcting the documented electronic fault,
restoring stable record/playback performance,
servicing the switching and transport systems,
and preparing the machine for reliable everyday operation.
- Record / Playback Preamplifier Repair:
The fault affecting the right-channel record/playback signal path
was diagnosed and repaired. - Signal Path & Contact Service:
The associated relay/contact circuitry in the record/playback section
was serviced to restore proper signal continuity
and reliable channel operation. - Electronic Component Replacement:
Selected electronic components in the affected circuit
were replaced as required,
including an MJE15032 device
and related supporting components. - Play / Record Switching Service:
The Play and Record switching contacts were cleaned and serviced
to improve reliable operation and reduce intermittent contact issues. - Control Cleaning:
Relevant switches and controls were cleaned and serviced
to reduce oxidation, noise, and intermittent operation. - Tape Path Inspection:
The tape path, tape guides, head area,
and related transport surfaces were inspected and cleaned. - GX Head Inspection:
The Akai Glass & Crystal Ferrite head assemblies
were inspected and cleaned. - Transport Inspection:
Play, Stop, Fast Forward, Rewind,
tape handling, reel operation, and Auto-Reverse functions
were inspected and serviced as required. - Pinch Roller & Brake System:
The pinch roller system and braking mechanism
were inspected for proper transport operation. - U.S. Power Conversion:
The unit was converted for
standard U.S. 120V AC operation
so it can be used in the United States
without an external 120V-to-100V step-down transformer. - Custom Exterior Restoration:
The exterior was professionally refinished in a distinctive
