PRODUCT OVERVIEW
Introduced in 1976, the JBL 4343 is one of JBL’s celebrated large-format four-way professional studio monitors, combining substantial low-frequency authority with dedicated mid-bass, horn-loaded high-frequency and ultra-high-frequency reproduction.
The classic JBL 4343 driver architecture features a 15-inch JBL 2231A woofer, a 10-inch JBL 2121 mid-bass driver, a JBL 2420 compression driver coupled to a 2307 horn and 2308 acoustic lens, and a JBL 2405 slot radiator.
The combination of four specialized driver sections allows the 4343 to deliver the scale, dynamics and frequency separation associated with classic JBL professional monitor systems.
The 15-inch woofer supplies a substantial low-frequency foundation, while the dedicated 10-inch mid-bass unit handles an important part of the lower-midrange region. The horn-loaded compression driver supports upper-midrange and high-frequency detail, complemented by the JBL 2405 ultra-high-frequency slot radiator.
An especially attractive feature of this set is its mirror-imaged ultra-high-frequency driver placement, with the slot tweeters positioned symmetrically across the stereo presentation.
Front-panel level controls allow adjustment of the upper-frequency balance, while the rear crossover configuration provides options for operation through the internal passive network or an appropriately configured external active crossover system.
This set has undergone cabinet and grille restoration by HQaudios, with walnut veneer cabinetry, blue front baffles and matching blue grille assemblies presenting the recognizable aesthetic of the JBL 4343.
The wooden speaker stands shown in some product photographs are for display only and are not included.

HQAUDIOS RESTORATION & TESTING

Before Restoration
When this JBL 4343 set arrived at our workshop, our technicians evaluated its cabinet construction, driver assemblies, front-panel controls, crossover network, rear connections and overall cosmetic condition.
The walnut cabinet surfaces showed age-related scratches and dents, including wear affecting the top, bottom and side panels. One blue front-baffle area also required cosmetic attention.
The blue grille assemblies showed wear to their fabric and frame structures, while some mounting hardware, badges and rear identification labels required attention.
The level controls also showed contact-related operating issues during the initial evaluation.
Woofer & Mid-Bass Inspection: We examined the large cone-driver sections, including their cone surfaces, surround areas, spiders, mounting points and signs of voice-coil rubbing.
High-Frequency Sections: The compression-driver and slot-radiator sections were included in the electrical and acoustic evaluation.
Crossover Inspection: Our technicians examined the crossover components, accessible wiring, connections and mounting assemblies for visible deterioration and age-related issues.

During Restoration
Our HQaudios team carried out cosmetic restoration and technical servicing while maintaining the characteristic four-way JBL 4343 monitor design.
Cabinet Refinishing: We restored the walnut cabinet surfaces, including attention to scratches, dents and uneven exterior finish areas. The completed cabinets present a more consistent walnut appearance.
Front-Baffle Detailing: The affected front-panel area received cosmetic attention to improve its appearance while retaining the traditional blue JBL monitor presentation.
Grille Restoration: Our team refurbished the grille assemblies and renewed the blue fabric presentation. The completed grilles display a cleaner, more uniform appearance.
Control Inspection & Service: The front-panel level-control assemblies received attention as part of the restoration process to address the contact issues identified during evaluation.
Driver-Surface Detailing: The visible woofer and mid-bass cone assemblies, surround areas and dust caps received cosmetic cleaning and detailing to improve their overall presentation.
Crossover & Connections: Accessible crossover boards, wiring areas and terminal assemblies received inspection and cleaning during technical service.
Badges & Identification Labels: Reproduction cosmetic badges and rear labels were used where original pieces were damaged or missing.
Final Assembly: The cabinets, driver assemblies, grilles and accessible exterior fittings received final cleaning and preparation for operational evaluation.

After Restoration / Final Testing
Following service and cosmetic restoration, the speaker systems were evaluated through functional checks and music playback.
Low-Frequency Output: Both 15-inch woofer sections were included in the playback evaluation to assess bass reproduction within the completed four-way systems.
Mid-Bass Output: The 10-inch mid-bass sections were included in the listening evaluation to assess their contribution to the overall system balance.
Horn-Loaded High-Frequency Output: The compression-driver sections were evaluated electrically and acoustically as part of the complete monitor systems.
Ultra-High-Frequency Output: The JBL slot-radiator sections were included in the post-service system evaluation.
Level Controls: The front-panel controls were included in the operational evaluation following service.
Stereo Listening Evaluation: Both speakers were assessed together using music playback to evaluate overall tonal presentation and left/right consistency.
Final Cosmetic Review: The walnut cabinets, blue baffles, driver presentation and restored grille assemblies were reviewed after reassembly.

CONDITION

Technical Condition
15-Inch Woofer Sections: The low-frequency driver assemblies received mechanical inspection and cleaning during service. Both were included in the post-service playback evaluation of the JBL 4343 systems.
10-Inch Mid-Bass Sections: The mid-bass driver assemblies were inspected for mechanical condition and received cosmetic detailing. Their operation was included in the completed speaker-system listening evaluation.
Horn-Loaded Compression-Driver Sections: The high-frequency compression-driver assemblies were included in electrical and acoustic inspection, followed by evaluation as part of the complete monitor systems.
JBL 2405 UHF Sections: The slot-radiator sections were included in the upper-frequency evaluation, maintaining the four-way JBL 4343 driver arrangement.
Crossover Networks: The passive crossover assemblies and accessible connections were inspected and cleaned as part of technical service. The monitors were subsequently evaluated as complete four-way systems.
Front-Panel Level Controls: The controls received service attention following the contact issues found during inspection. Adjustment function was included in post-service operational evaluation.
Rear Speaker Connections: The rear terminal and crossover-selection assemblies were included in the inspection and retain the JBL 4343 connection layout.
Internal / External Crossover Configuration: The monitors retain their original-style selection arrangement. External bi-amplifier operation requires a compatible active crossover and separately configured amplification.

Cosmetic Condition
Walnut Cabinets: The walnut veneer cabinet surfaces have been cosmetically refinished and detailed. The pair presents with relatively consistent wood coloration, with minor remaining vintage marks visible in the photographs.
Blue Front Baffles: The classic blue front panels retain the recognizable four-way JBL monitor arrangement. The previously affected front-panel area has received cosmetic restoration, with minor signs of age remaining.
Woofer & Mid-Bass Drivers: The visible cone surfaces, dust caps, surrounds and mounting areas have received cosmetic detailing and present with a relatively uniform appearance.
Horns & Acoustic Lenses: The black JBL horn and horizontal acoustic-lens assemblies remain fitted in the upper-frequency sections of the blue front baffles.
UHF Slot Radiators: The JBL slot-tweeter assemblies are positioned symmetrically across the two monitors, creating the attractive mirror-imaged front presentation.
Blue Grilles: The grille assemblies have been refurbished with renewed blue cloth. The completed grilles present a consistent color and texture across the set.
Controls & Front Labels: Front-panel level controls and identification markings remain present. Reproduction cosmetic pieces are used where original badges or labels were damaged or missing.
Rear Panels: The rear panels retain their speaker connection and internal/external crossover-selection arrangements, along with reproduction labels where required. Minor vintage hardware and surface wear may remain.
Overall Presentation: A professionally cosmetically restored vintage JBL 4343 set with attractive walnut cabinetry, blue front baffles, mirror-imaged UHF placement and matching restored grille panels. Please review all actual product photographs for the exact cosmetic condition.

AMPLIFICATION & OPERATING CONFIGURATION
The JBL 4343 may be operated with quality vintage or modern amplification capable of stable operation into an 8-ohm nominal load.
For conventional operation, the internal passive crossover is used to distribute the amplifier signal among the four driver sections.
External bi-amplifier operation requires a compatible active crossover, separately configured amplifier channels and the correct rear-panel crossover selection. Changing the rear selector alone does not constitute a complete external crossover system.
Our HQaudios team can assist with compatible amplifier selection, speaker placement and system-matching questions.
