JBL L166 12 Inch 3-Way Speakers – PRO RESTORED – 1-Year Warranty
Professionally Restored by HQaudios – Backed by Our 1-Year Warranty.
Up for sale is a closely numbered pair of JBL L166 3-Way Loudspeakers, identified directly by their original front foilcal labels as Model L166, with serial numbers 40428A and 40447A.
The original foilcal labels on this exact pair clearly identify both speakers as JBL Model L166.
The L166 is a large-format 3-way bass-reflex loudspeaker built around a 12-inch low-frequency section, dedicated cone midrange section, and distinctive hemispherical dome high-frequency section. Front-mounted Presence and Brilliance controls allow the midrange and high-frequency balance to be adjusted for room acoustics and listening preference.
This pair retains the classic JBL presentation with attractive walnut-finished cabinets, black front baffles, blue grille assemblies with JBL badges, front-firing bass-reflex ports, and original L166 identification and control foilcals.
The pair was professionally restored and serviced by HQaudios, with attention given to the woofer assemblies, driver operation, front controls, crossover operation, cabinet presentation, electrical connections, and final left-to-right acoustic consistency.

Sound Character
The JBL L166 combines the physical scale and dynamic capability expected from a classic large-format JBL system with an extended and refined upper-frequency presentation.
The 12-inch low-frequency section provides substantial bass weight together with the speed and impact that make vintage JBL speakers particularly engaging with drums, bass guitar, rock, jazz, soul, and live recordings.
The dedicated cone midrange section handles the critical vocal and instrumental range with strong presence and projection. Vocals, guitars, brass, piano, and percussion retain the direct and physical presentation associated with classic JBL loudspeaker designs.
The hemispherical dome high-frequency section contributes detail, openness, and broad high-frequency dispersion.
The front Presence and Brilliance controls allow the listener to fine-tune midrange and high-frequency balance according to the room, associated electronics, and personal listening preference.
The overall presentation is dynamic, spacious, detailed, and distinctly JBL, with substantial scale for energetic listening while retaining refinement for vocals and acoustic recordings.
Cosmetic Condition
The cabinets present very well overall with attractive walnut grain and only light age-related wear.
Minor marks, finish variation, and small signs of previous use are visible upon close inspection, particularly around some front-baffle and driver-mounting areas.
The woofer areas show some light cosmetic wear around portions of the mounting edges. Minor adhesive or finish traces are also visible around portions of the woofer dust-cap areas upon close inspection.
The original identification foilcals remain present and readable with normal age-related wear. The rear terminal areas also show light evidence of previous use.
The blue grille assemblies present especially well overall, with even color, good tension, no major visible tears, and JBL badges still present.
Rear speaker terminals are present and appear clean and intact.

HQaudios Restoration & Testing Process
Before Restoration
Before restoration, both JBL L166 speaker systems underwent detailed visual, mechanical, electrical, and acoustic inspection.
The cabinets, front baffles, grille assemblies, driver mounting hardware, terminals, controls, and exterior surfaces were evaluated for age-related wear and deterioration.
Each woofer assembly was inspected for cone condition, surround condition, spider behavior, voice-coil movement, mechanical centering, unwanted rubbing, and mounting integrity.
The midrange and high-frequency sections were checked individually for continuity, secure installation, and acoustic output.
The Presence and Brilliance controls were checked throughout their operating ranges for intermittent contact, oxidation, or inconsistent output.
Crossover operation, internal wiring, driver connections, accessible solder joints, and rear terminals were inspected.
Left and right driver operation was compared before service to identify abnormal differences between the two cabinets.
During Restoration
Both woofer assemblies were professionally inspected and serviced for proper mechanical movement, voice-coil alignment, and clean low-frequency output.
Woofer mounting hardware and electrical connections were inspected before final installation.
The midrange sections were cleaned and checked for secure installation and reliable electrical connection.
The high-frequency sections were carefully inspected and cleaned without disturbing the delicate dome assemblies.
The front Presence and Brilliance controls were cleaned and treated to improve smooth and reliable adjustment.
Accessible electrical contact surfaces were cleaned and treated to address oxidation and contamination.
Internal wiring, connections, and accessible solder joints were checked for continuity and secure connection.
Crossover operation was inspected, and driver polarity and wiring paths were checked during reassembly.
Cabinet and front-baffle surfaces were carefully cleaned and detailed while preserving the authentic vintage walnut presentation.
The blue grille assemblies were cleaned and prepared for proper fitment to the restored cabinets.
After Restoration
After restoration, each driver section was tested individually.
Both woofer sections were evaluated for clean low-frequency output, smooth mechanical movement, stable operation, and absence of rubbing or abnormal mechanical noise.
Both midrange sections were tested for consistent output, and both high-frequency sections were evaluated for clean high-frequency reproduction.
The Presence and Brilliance controls were tested through their usable adjustment ranges.
Crossover transitions between the woofer, midrange, and high-frequency sections were evaluated using full-range program material.
Driver polarity and acoustic phase relationships were checked for correct system integration.
Left and right speakers were compared for output consistency, tonal balance, stereo imaging, driver integration, and dynamic behavior.
Cabinets, driver mounting points, and grille assemblies were also checked during playback for unwanted resonance, vibration, or mechanical noise.
Finally, the pair underwent extended real-world listening evaluation before final approval.
Drivers, Crossovers & Cabinets
12-Inch Low-Frequency Section
Each cabinet uses a large 12-inch low-frequency driver that provides the acoustic foundation of the L166 system.
The woofer assemblies on this pair were inspected and serviced by HQaudios for proper mechanical movement, voice-coil alignment, secure mounting, and clean low-frequency operation.
The available photographs do not show the rear magnet labels, so this listing does not assign a specific woofer model number to this pair.
Midrange Section
The L166 uses a dedicated cone midrange section to reproduce the critical vocal and instrumental range between the large woofer and high-frequency section.
The midrange drivers were checked for continuity, secure installation, and consistent acoustic output.
Hemispherical Dome High-Frequency Section
The distinctive silver-faced hemispherical dome high-frequency section contributes extended treble reproduction and wide dispersion.
The high-frequency drivers on this pair were carefully inspected and evaluated for clean output.
Crossover System
The internal crossover system integrates the low-, mid-, and high-frequency sections and works together with the front-mounted Presence and Brilliance controls.
Crossover operation, internal wiring, connections, and driver integration were inspected during restoration.
Because the current photograph set does not include internal crossover identification, this listing does not assign a specific crossover network model number to this pair.
