Sound Character

The JBL 4425 is famous for delivering the “best of both worlds”: the visceral slam of a large JBL 12-inch woofer combined with the startling clarity and speed of a horn-loaded compression driver.

Unlike traditional horns that can sometimes sound “honky” or beam high frequencies into a narrow space, the Bi-Radial horn ensures constant directivity. This means you get a massive, highly detailed 3D soundstage and a huge sweet spot. Vocals, brass, and percussion are rendered with breathtaking live-concert realism without the listening fatigue often associated with older horn designs.

Down low, the front-ported 12-inch woofer provides bass that is incredibly punchy, articulate, and fast, easily keeping up with the speed of the horn. The result is a highly energetic, transparent, and immersive listening experience.

HQaudios Restoration & Testing Process

Before Restoration

Before any restoration work begins, the 4425 monitors undergo a rigorous inspection. We carefully evaluate the condition of the 12-inch woofers.

The delicate titanium diaphragms inside the compression drivers are tested for health and continuity, and the Bi-Radial horns are inspected for structural integrity. The front-panel high-frequency attenuators, which often become oxidized, and the internal crossover networks are also thoroughly checked.

During Restoration

The 12-inch woofers are meticulously re-foamed using exact-spec replacements, ensuring precise voice-coil centering to maintain JBL’s tight bass response and high power handling without distortion.

The high-frequency attenuators are disassembled and treated with professional contact cleaner to eliminate any scratching or signal dropouts.

Finally, the iconic blue baffles are carefully detailed, and the heavy walnut veneer cabinets are gently cleaned, conditioned, and hand-oiled to revive their rich, natural luster.

After Restoration

Once restoration is complete, the 4425 undergoes comprehensive acoustic testing. Frequency sweeps are run to verify smooth crossover integration between the 12-inch woofer and the horn, ensuring there is voice-coil rub or unwanted resonance.

We then conduct hours of continuous listening tests. We evaluate their off-axis stereo imaging, transient speed, and dynamic impact to ensure they meet the strict performance standards expected of a true JBL professional monitor.

Drivers, Crossovers & Cabinets

The magic of the 4425 lies in the seamless acoustic integration between the highly advanced Bi-Radial horn and the heavy-duty 12-inch woofer. Maintaining the integrity of these components is crucial to preserving the speaker’s ruler-flat frequency response and legendary dispersion characteristics.

Because the acoustic integrity of these parts dictates the final sound, they receive particular attention throughout HQaudios’ restoration process. Whenever possible, close-up photographs of the Bi-Radial horns and freshly re-foamed drivers are included, and additional photos or videos are available upon request.

Suggested Pairing

Due to the efficiency of the horn and the high-current demands of the robust 12-inch woofer, the JBL 4425 is remarkably versatile. It pairs brilliantly with both muscular solid-state equipment and high-quality tube amplification.

McIntosh System (Smooth & Powerful)
Amplifiers: McIntosh MC2105 or MAC4100
Result: The legendary McIntosh warmth smooths out the ultra-revealing horn, while the high-current power supply grips the 12-inch woofer for massive, effortless bass.

Classic Sansui (Rich & Detailed)
Amplifiers: Sansui 9090 or AU-919
Result: A beautiful synergy that highlights the 4425’s incredible transient response, making jazz, blues, and acoustic recordings sound incredibly lifelike.

High-End Tube Amplification
Amplifiers: Push-pull KT88 or EL34 based amplifiers
Result: Thanks to the high sensitivity of the Bi-Radial horn, tubes can drive the 4425s beautifully, creating an incredibly holographic and 3D soundstage with a sweet, airy top end.

Basic Use Guide

To help maintain the long-term performance of your vintage monitors, we recommend the following:

  • Place the speakers on heavy, low speaker stands to elevate the Bi-Radial horns to ear level for the ultimate stereo imaging.
  • Use high-quality, properly gauged speaker wire.
  • Periodically rotate the high-frequency level control back and forth to keep the internal contacts clean and prevent oxidation.
  • Avoid pushing your amplifier into “clipping” (distortion at high volumes), as this can easily damage the compression driver diaphragms.
  • Contact us anytime if you need assistance with room placement, amplifier matching, or setup.
