PRODUCT OVERVIEW
The Technics RS-640U is a top-loading stereo cassette deck introduced by Technics (Matsushita / Panasonic) around 1976–1977. It uses a 2-head layout with an HPF record/playback head, a double-gap ferrite erase head and an electronically controlled DC motor.
Dolby B noise reduction, a Normal / CrO2 tape selector, an MPX filter, a peak-check switch and separate left/right line-input level controls make it a practical deck for both playback and home recording, while the large analog VU meters and brushed-aluminum top panel give it the classic look of 1970s Technics hi-fi.
This unit has had its power supply and record/playback preamp serviced and its VU meter lamps replaced, and it is ready to play your cassette collection or record from a vintage system.
HQAUDIOS RESTORATION & TESTING

Before Restoration
This Technics RS-640U was carefully inspected upon arrival to evaluate its mechanical, electrical, and cosmetic condition.
The power supply, the record/playback preamp, the meter and lamp circuits, the transport and the controls were checked under power. The electrolytic capacitors on the serviced boards were measured against their rated values (within 10% tolerance), and the switches, level controls and input/output jacks were inspected.
Inspection Findings: The power supply board and the record/playback preamp board required repair. The VU meter lamps needed replacement. The play and record switches and the input and output level controls needed cleaning.
The inspection results were used to determine the work required for this specific unit.

During Restoration
Based on the inspection results, this Technics RS-640U was restored according to HQaudios’ technical standards while preserving its original design and sound.
Power Supply: The power supply was repaired. Three 220µF/50V and three 1000µF/63V capacitors were replaced.
Record/Playback Preamp: The record/playback preamp was repaired. Two 2SA1015 and twenty-five 2SC1815 transistors were replaced, together with thirty-one 10µF/50V capacitors (twenty Nichicon Muse bipolar and eleven Elna), six 100µF/25V capacitors and four 47µF/50V capacitors.
VU Meter Lamps: The VU meter lamps were replaced, and the meter lamp circuit was repaired.
Switches & Controls: The play and record switches and the input and output level controls were cleaned.
Cosmetic Refurbishment: The brushed-aluminum panel, knobs and jacks were cleaned, and scratches on the black metal panels were touched up with black paint.

After Restoration / Final Testing
Once restoration was completed, the deck underwent comprehensive testing under real operating conditions.
Playback & Recording: Playback and recording were tested on both channels, with the VU meters checked during operation.
Dolby B & Controls: Dolby B noise reduction, the tape selector and the input/output level controls were checked.
Final QC: Only after completing HQaudios’ restoration and testing process was the deck approved and prepared for its next owner.
