| Before Restoration | The JBL 4343 pair was carefully inspected upon arrival to evaluate its mechanical, electrical, acoustic, and cosmetic condition. Each original cabinet, cone, surround, spider, horn assembly, acoustic lens, and high-frequency driver was checked for condition. Every driver was checked by hand for voice-coil rub or binding. The DC resistance of each driver was measured as a voice-coil continuity and consistency check. Corresponding driver readings were compared for consistency; DC resistance is not the same as the speaker’s nominal impedance. The original JBL 3143 crossover networks were inspected, crossover capacitors were checked against their original values, and the original L-pad level controls were examined for noisy or inconsistent operation. |
| During Restoration | Based on the inspection results, this JBL 4343 pair was serviced according to HQaudios’ technical standards while preserving its original JBL components and voicing. The intake inspection found the original L-pad level controls on both speakers to be scratchy / noisy when rotated. The L-pads were disassembled, cleaned, and treated with contact cleaner, and now operate smoothly and quietly across their usable range. No additional driver or crossover faults requiring replacement were found. All original JBL drivers, cones, diaphragms, crossover networks, cabinets, baffles, grilles, controls, and terminals were retained. The drivers, crossover boards, controls, terminals, walnut cabinets, blue baffles, and blue grilles were cleaned and detailed. |
| After Restoration | Once service was completed, the pair underwent comprehensive testing under real operating conditions. Frequency response was checked with an RTA and calibrated sound-card setup to confirm balanced operation and close consistency between the two speakers. Driver polarity was verified separately with a polarity / phase-reversal check, and the L-pad controls for the mid-bass, mid/high, and high-frequency sections were checked through their operating range. Finally, the pair underwent an extended listening test with a wide range of music to confirm dynamics, tonal balance, stereo imaging, and overall operational stability. |

Listening Character
The JBL 4343 delivers the large-scale presentation associated with classic JBL professional monitors. The 2231A woofer provides substantial low-frequency extension and dynamic authority, while the dedicated 2121 mid-bass driver helps preserve definition through the lower midrange. The 2420 compression driver with 2307 horn and 2308 acoustic lens carries the mid/high range, and the 2405 extends the system into the upper treble. Actual Cosmetic Condition
This JBL 4343 pair is in Very Good vintage cosmetic condition. Both original walnut cabinets show light surface scratches and several small age-related dents, primarily along the lower edges and one side panel. These imperfections are visible in the listing photos and do not affect operation.

Amplifier & System Compatibility
The JBL 4343 has an 8-ohm nominal impedance and high sensitivity, but amplifier quality and clean headroom remain important. For passive single-amplifier operation, use a stable amplifier appropriate for an 8-ohm load and avoid sustained clipping.
The 4343 can also be used in its original two-channel multi-amplifier configuration with an appropriate external active crossover around 300Hz and the rear-panel configuration set correctly. Multi-amplifier operation is not passive bi-wiring.
