PRODUCT OVERVIEW

The Altec Model 15 is a classic American two-way loudspeaker system combining a 12-inch low-frequency driver with Altec’s distinctive horn-loaded compression-driver technology. Developed as part of Altec’s home loudspeaker range, the Model 15 brings together professional loudspeaker engineering and traditional wood-cabinet styling.

The high-frequency system features Altec’s radial phase plug compression driver, coupled to a curved radial horn. This design was developed to improve high-frequency extension and dispersion. The manufacturer specifies a frequency response of 30 Hz to 20 kHz and a crossover frequency of 1,700 Hz. A vented enclosure supports the 12-inch woofer, while separate midrange and high-frequency shelving controls allow adjustment of the speaker’s tonal balance.

Before Restoration

When we received this Altec Model 15 pair, the cabinets showed scratches and age-related surface wear. The initial examination also identified an issue affecting the foam area of a low-frequency driver. The speaker assemblies required service attention before final reassembly.

During Restoration

Speaker Foam Service: We performed foam-related service work on the affected speaker assembly to address the issue identified during the initial inspection.

Speaker Reassembly: We reassembled the serviced speaker components following the foam work.

Technical Condition

Low-Frequency Drivers: Both 12-inch woofer assemblies are installed in their cabinets. The affected speaker assembly received foam-related service and was reassembled.

High-Frequency Horns: Both cabinets feature the curved radial horn assemblies of the Altec Model 15 design.

Level Controls: Separate midrange and high-frequency shelving controls are installed on the front panels of both speakers.

Speaker Connections: Both cabinets feature rear speaker input terminals as shown in the product photographs.

Cosmetic Condition

Cabinets / Wood Veneer: Brown wood-grain cabinet surfaces with visible differences in color and grain between the two speakers. Scratches, surface marks, and age-related wear remain visible in the photographs.

Front Baffles: Wood-veneered front panels retain the distinctive Altec Model 15 layout, including rectangular horn openings and exposed woofer assemblies.

Woofers: Both front-mounted bass drivers have dark cones, prominent center dust caps, and visible surround areas. The close-up photographs show their present cosmetic appearance.
