PRODUCT OVERVIEW
The Pioneer SX-980 is a classic AM/FM stereo receiver from Pioneer’s highly regarded late-1970s SX-x80 series, combining substantial amplifier performance with the elegant silver-face styling and extensive operating features that made vintage Pioneer receivers so popular.
Its direct-coupled amplifier is factory-rated at 80 watts per channel into 8 ohms, with both channels driven from 20 Hz to 20 kHz at no more than 0.05% total harmonic distortion.
The front panel features a beautifully arranged analog tuning display, dual needle-type power meters, brushed-silver aluminum controls and a comprehensive selection of listening adjustments.
With two phono inputs, AUX, microphone input, two tape-monitor loops, PRE OUT / POWER AMP IN connections and Speaker A/B selection, the SX-980 provides exceptional flexibility for building a classic stereo system.
Tone-shaping options include bass and treble controls with selectable turnover frequencies, high and low filters, loudness compensation and FM muting.
This particular receiver features a brushed-silver faceplate, dual analog power meters and walnut-finish wood case. Its rear panel retains the original-style spring-clip speaker terminals and is marked for AC 120V / 60Hz operation.
HQaudios has performed service and operational evaluation on this vintage receiver, including attention to the previously reported audio-output issue and final stereo playback testing.

HQAUDIOS SERVICE & TESTING

Before Service
When this Pioneer SX-980 arrived for evaluation, the receiver exhibited a no-audio-output condition that required technical attention.
Our technicians reviewed the receiver’s overall operating condition, including the audio-signal path, amplifier operation, illumination, front-panel controls and rear connection assemblies.
The inspection also identified age-related service needs associated with electronic components and lighting.
The exterior was evaluated for cosmetic wear, including the brushed-aluminum front trim, control knobs, display area and walnut-finish wood case.

During Service

Audio-Signal Evaluation: We investigated the reported no-sound condition and examined the receiver’s signal path and amplifier operation as part of the service process.
Electronic Component Inspection: Aging electronic components and associated circuit areas received technical attention during troubleshooting and service.
Controls & Switches: Front-panel control and switching assemblies were included in the functional evaluation, with attention to normal operation and consistent adjustment.
Illumination: The dial and indicator-lighting assemblies were examined during service to evaluate their condition and operation.
Rear Connections: The speaker terminal assemblies and external connections were inspected. The receiver retains its original-style spring-clip speaker connections.
Exterior Detailing: The silver faceplate, control surfaces, accessible exterior areas and walnut-finish wood case received cosmetic attention while preserving the receiver’s vintage appearance.

After Service / Final Testing
Following service, the receiver was evaluated through stereo music playback and functional operating checks.
Left & Right Audio Output: Stereo playback was used to verify that both amplifier channels produced audio output following service.
Speaker Playback: The receiver’s speaker-output function was evaluated during connected-speaker operation.
Listening Evaluation: The SX-980 was assessed during music reproduction for audible channel operation and overall stereo presentation.
Front-Panel Operation: Receiver controls and operating functions were included in the post-service evaluation.
Final Inspection: The receiver received a visual and functional review before preparation for sale.

CONDITION

Technical Condition
Stereo Amplifier: The receiver was serviced following a reported no-sound condition. Subsequent music playback demonstrated audio output from both left and right channels.
Speaker Connections: The rear Speaker A/B terminal assemblies were inspected during service. Original-style spring-clip terminals remain fitted, matching the receiver’s photographed rear-panel configuration.
Front-Panel Controls: The switches and rotary controls were included in the service evaluation and remained part of the receiver’s completed stereo playback setup.
Analog Power Meters: The original-style dual needle-type power meter assemblies are present on the front panel, maintaining the receiver’s classic analog display arrangement.
Dial & Indicators: The tuning display and indicator assemblies were examined during service. The receiver retains its characteristic illuminated analog dial presentation.
AM/FM Tuner: The receiver retains its analog AM/FM tuner and related tuning controls as part of the original Pioneer SX-980 configuration.
Inputs & Outputs: The original Phono 1/2, AUX, microphone, tape-monitor and PRE OUT / POWER AMP IN connection layout remains available on the receiver.
Power Supply Rating: The rear identification marking specifies AC 120V / 60Hz, suitable for standard U.S. mains power.

Cosmetic Condition
Brushed-Silver Faceplate: The aluminum front panel retains the classic Pioneer SX-980 silver-face appearance, with clearly visible control labels and identification markings. Portions of the upper aluminum trim show age-related scratches and surface variations.
