Cosmetic Condition

This unit is in Excellent vintage cosmetic condition. The faceplate, knobs, switches, meters, reel tables, side panels, top cover, and rear panel are shown clearly in the photos.

As with most vintage audio equipment, there may be normal signs of age and previous use, including small marks, light scratches, minor finish wear, or other cosmetic imperfections as shown.

HQaudios Restoration & Testing Process

Before Restoration

• After decades of service, the AKAI GX-636‘s three-motor transport, Dual Capstan tape transport system, and Auto Reverse recording and playback mechanism require careful inspection before restoration begins.
• For this GX-636, HQaudios paid particular attention to the condition of the three-motor transport, dual-capstan assembly, auto-reverse mechanism, tape heads, capstans, pinch rollers, tape guides, reel hubs, and complete tape path.
• The power supply, recording and playback circuits, signal path, transport control electronics, switches, push buttons, and illuminated VU meter system were also carefully evaluated to determine the deck’s overall operating condition before restoration began.

During Restoration

• Based on the inspection results, this GX-636 was restored according to HQaudios’ technical standards while preserving its original engineering and performance characteristics.
• The three-motor transport and dual-capstan system were cleaned, inspected, serviced, and adjusted to ensure smooth and accurate tape movement at both 3¾ ips and 7½ ips. Tape heads, capstans, pinch rollers, tape guides, and the entire tape path were carefully cleaned and evaluated to maintain proper tape contact and transport stability.
• Playback, recording, Auto Reverse, fast forward, rewind, pause, braking, and transport functions were tested for dependable operation, with applicable adjustments performed during servicing.
• The power supply, signal path, and internal circuit boards were inspected for reliable operation. Components that no longer met technical specifications were replaced based on the condition of this unit, while critical solder joints were inspected and reinforced to improve operational stability.
• After the technical restoration is complete, the exterior is professionally cleaned and detailed to preserve the GX-636‘s original appearance while respecting the authentic character of vintage AKAI equipment.

After Restoration

• Once restoration was completed, this GX-636 underwent comprehensive functional testing under real operating conditions.
• Playback and recording performance are verified at both available tape speeds. The three-motor transport, Dual Capstan system, Auto Reverse mechanism, channel balance, speed stability, VU meter response, and all audio inputs and outputs are thoroughly tested to ensure the deck performs as originally designed.
• Finally, the unit undergoes several hours of continuous listening tests through a complete vintage audio system to evaluate analog sound quality, transport stability, and overall real-world performance.
• Only after successfully meeting HQaudios’ restoration and testing standards is the AKAI GX-636 approved and prepared for its next owner.

The heads, tape path, guides, capstan, pinch roller, and reel movement are important areas on any vintage reel-to-reel deck. These areas were inspected during service and are shown in the photo section when possible.
