PRODUCT OVERVIEW

The Altec Lansing 879A Santana is a sealed (acoustic-suspension type) 2-way system from Altec’s consumer line of the early 1970s. Each cabinet pairs the 15-inch 420A "Bi-Flex" cone woofer with a 3-inch cone tweeter, crossed over at about 2.5 kHz, and is rated at 8 ohms with about 100 dB/W/1 m sensitivity.

This pair has wood-veneer cabinets with brown cloth grilles and Altec badges. The original Altec model labels are still on the rear panels, and interior photos of the woofers and wiring are included in the gallery.

It has been inspected, cleaned and tested by HQaudios. The photos show the actual pair you will receive.

HQAUDIOS RESTORATION & TESTING

Before Restoration

This Altec 879A Santana pair was carefully inspected upon arrival to evaluate its mechanical, electrical, and cosmetic condition.

Each cabinet, cone, surround, and spider was checked for originality and for glue joints that had loosened or shifted with age. Every driver was tested by hand for voice-coil rub – a scratching noise or a stiff, binding cone indicates a shifted or heat-damaged voice coil. The DC resistance of every driver was checked against its nominal impedance. The crossover networks were examined for bulging or leaking capacitors, each capacitor was measured against its original value (within 10% tolerance), and the wiring and terminals were inspected.

The inspection results were used to determine the work required for this specific pair.

During Restoration

Based on the inspection results, this Altec 879A Santana pair was serviced according to HQaudios’ technical standards while preserving its original engineering and voicing.

Drivers: All drivers retain their original cones and diaphragms, which are in good condition.

Cleaning & Detailing: The drivers, crossover components and terminals were cleaned, and the cabinets and grilles were cleaned and detailed.

After Restoration / Final Testing

Once service was completed, the pair underwent comprehensive testing under real operating conditions.

Phase Check: Driver polarity was verified using a phase-reversal check to ensure both speakers play in correct phase.

Listening Test: The pair underwent an extended real-world listening test with a wide range of music to confirm output from both the woofer and tweeter of each speaker and a balanced stereo image.

Final QC: Only after completing HQaudios’ service and testing process was the pair approved and prepared for its next owner.
