Pioneer SX-780 Vintage Stereo Receiver – Restored – 1-Year Warranty
Professionally Restored by HQaudios – Backed by Our 1-Year Warranty.
Up for sale is the Pioneer SX-780, a classic late-1970s AM/FM stereo receiver combining
Pioneer’s distinctive silver-and-black front-panel styling, analog tuning display, dual power meters,
phono capability, tape connectivity, and a 45-watt-per-channel stereo amplifier.
The SX-780 occupies a particularly practical place in Pioneer’s vintage receiver lineup. Its rated output is
substantial enough for many bookshelf and floorstanding loudspeakers, while its compact proportions make it
easier to integrate into a home listening system than the company’s larger high-power receivers.
Visually, the receiver retains the design language that made late-1970s Pioneer components so recognizable:
brushed aluminum trim, illuminated analog tuning scale, twin power meters, a black control panel, large
aluminum knobs, and walnut-grained cabinet panels.
This specific unit has been professionally restored, serviced, inspected, and tested by HQaudios while
preserving the original engineering and vintage character of the Pioneer SX-780.

Sound Character
The Pioneer SX-780 combines moderate output power with the lively, engaging presentation
associated with many Pioneer receivers from this period.
Its 45-watt-per-channel amplifier is well suited to a broad range of vintage loudspeakers, especially designs
with moderate to high sensitivity. Bass has useful weight and control for a receiver of this size, while the
midrange keeps vocals, guitars, piano, and acoustic instruments present and easy to follow.
The upper range remains open and energetic, making the SX-780 a natural match for classic rock, jazz, soul,
blues, acoustic recordings, and general vintage hi-fi listening. Bass, treble, loudness, and low-filter
controls provide additional flexibility for different rooms, speakers, and listening levels.
Cosmetic Condition
This Pioneer SX-780 presents in Very Good vintage cosmetic condition,
with normal signs of age and previous use consistent with a receiver from this era.
Please review all photos carefully, as they are part of the description.
- Faceplate / Front Panel: Clean overall presentation with the original Pioneer layout and lettering visible.
- Dial Glass / Tuning Display: Original analog tuning display remains clear and visually attractive.
- Power Meters: Both front-panel power meters are present with their original appearance.
- Knobs / Controls / Switches: Original control layout remains intact with normal vintage signs of use.
- Cabinet Panels: Walnut-grained cabinet surfaces show normal age-related wear consistent with previous ownership.
- Rear Panel / Connections: Original connection layout remains intact, including speaker terminals, antenna terminals, RCA connections, AC outlets, and factory identification label.
Minor surface marks, cabinet wear, or other cosmetic imperfections may remain. Please use the detailed
photographs as the final reference for the exact condition of this unit.
HQaudios Restoration & Testing Process
Before Restoration
The Pioneer SX-780 was carefully inspected to evaluate its electrical, amplifier,
tuner, control, connection, protection, and cosmetic condition.
Particular attention was given to the power supply, left and right amplifier channels, protection circuitry,
FM / AM tuner section, phono input, AUX input, tape monitor circuits, speaker outputs, headphone output,
controls, switches, power meters, tuning display, rear-panel connections, internal wiring, and ventilation.
The inspection results were used to determine the service and restoration work appropriate for this unit.
During Restoration
The receiver was serviced and restored according to HQaudios’ technical standards while preserving
the original Pioneer design and operating characteristics of the SX-780.
The amplifier section, power supply, tuner section, controls, switches, signal path, speaker connections,
tape connections, and accessible internal areas were inspected and serviced as part of the restoration process.
The exterior, front panel, knobs, dial area, cabinet surfaces, and accessible rear-panel areas were carefully
cleaned and detailed while preserving the authentic vintage appearance of the receiver.
After Restoration
After restoration, the Pioneer SX-780 underwent functional and listening evaluation
under normal operating conditions.
Testing included left and right amplifier channels, channel balance, Speaker A and Speaker B outputs,
FM reception, AM reception, phono input, AUX input, tape monitor functions, headphone output, volume,
balance, bass, treble, loudness, low filter, FM muting, mode selection, tuning operation, power meters,
and protection operation.
The unit also underwent extended real-world operational and listening tests to evaluate stability,
channel consistency, tuner operation, and overall functionality.
Only after completing HQaudios’ restoration and testing process was the
Pioneer SX-780 approved and prepared for its next owner.
Amplifier, Tuner & Controls
45-Watt Stereo Amplifier
The SX-780 is factory rated at 45 watts per channel into 8 ohms from
20 Hz to 20 kHz with no more than 0.05% total harmonic distortion.
This output level makes it a practical match for many vintage bookshelf and floorstanding speakers.
AM / FM Analog Tuner
The receiver includes both FM and AM reception with a traditional analog tuning scale,
tuning meter, signal meter, stereo indicator, and FM muting control.
Independent Power Meters
Separate left and right power meters provide visual indication of amplifier output and form one of the
defining visual elements of the SX-780 front panel.
Tone, Filter & Listening Controls
The SX-780 provides bass, treble, balance, loudness, low-filter, mode, speaker-selection,
tape-monitor, and FM-muting controls. The bass and treble controls use center OFF positions that bypass
their tone-control networks for a flat response.
